Of Cuba, we often only show its capital city, Havana, or its folklore. As the country’s general elections are heating up, this film, in the shape of a road movie, will allow us to travel across the island. A journey made at a key moment, as the debate surrounding post-Castro Cuba is more prevalent than ever before; Raul Castro himself has declared, “The country must change to avoid sinking.” It has indeed been a year since Cubans started being able to work for their own bread. Another proof of the “revolution” prompted by Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother and heir to his throne, is enabling his fellow citizens to legally acquire and sell their homes or even their vehicles. What impact does that hold upon the daily lives of Cubans? From Santiago de Cuba, the nation’s second most important city a...

From Santiago de Cuba, the nation’s second most important city and starting point to its “revolutionary pathway”, we’ll be meeting a hairdresser who has just began working independently, a state-employed single mother from a backwoods town in the mountains who is struggling to make ends meet, a former administration executive who left his job to try his hand at agriculture, and even a priest whose celebration of the Virgin Mary equals that of the nation’s flag. Our journey across the sugarcane fields towards the nation’s capital will help understand the inner workings of a worn-out socialist system desperately attempting to jam its unavoidable decline, at least economically, by visiting a factory that has long been shut down and whose reopening is awaited like the Messiah. Our narrative will also include striking videos recorded by dissidents as well as archival footage. Beyond the revolutionary fables, what of the school and health systems still considered brands of the regime? What are a 20-year-old’s dreams made up of in Cuba? From a former barracks converted into a school, to the hospitals’ interiors, the film demonstrates the gap between reality and bygone revolutionary fantasies. As we go through shops, marketplaces, we witness firsthand the Kafkaesque effects of the dual currency system the Cubans must deal with to satisfy their most basic needs. And all along our journey, as we also decipher what went on behind the scenes of the shoot, what with our local guide who was as much an assistant as he was a censor, we draw as close as possible to the complex reality of a political system clinging to its last breath… Our road movie broadens its reach through the interviews led by Daniel Leconte with important political figures, intellectuals such as the Eduardo Manet, or even the Cuban journalist Julio Cesar Galvez Rodriguez. Hands Off Assata Shakur! NBC Reports: HAVANA — Cuban President Raul Castro on Saturday demanded that the United States respect Cuba's communist rule as the two countries work toward normalizing diplomatic ties. President Barack Obama this week reset Washington's Cold War-era policy on Cuba and the two countries swapped prisoners in a historic deal after 18 months of secret talks. U.S. officials will visit Havana in January to start talks on normalization, and Obama has said his government will push Cuba on issues of human and political rights as they negotiate over the coming months. Castro said Saturday he is open to discussing a wide range of issues but that they should also cover the United States and he stressed that Cuba would not be giving up its socialist principles. "In the same way that we have never demanded that the United States change its political system, we will demand respect for ours," Castro told Cuba's National Assembly in a session that turned into a celebration of resistance to U.S. aggression. The National Assembly also gave a standing ovation to the three men convicted of spying in the U.S. and were freed as part of the prisoner swap. Sitting behind them was Elian Gonzalez, who in 2000 became internationally known when a custody battle between his Cuban father and American relatives in Miami became a diplomatic incident. http://www.allblackmedia.com

Cuba and the European Union signed an agreement to normalize political relations and increase economic cooperation, which will allow the Caribbean nation to expand its ties with the bloc of 28 countries. (Soundbite, Spanish) Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the EU "The agreement marks the beginning of a new phase of bilateral relations. This contractual agreement is a historic demonstration of mutual trust and understanding between us. A clear framework has been created for the improvement of political dialogue as well as being a platform for the development of bilateral cooperation and joint action in multilateral forums to address global challenges. " The pact with the European Union was signed few days before the visit to the island by US President Barack Obama and after almost two years of bilateral discussions. (Soundbite, Spanish) Bruno Rodriguez, Foreign Minister of Cuba "Starting today, a new stage has begun with the signing of this agreement. This will allow us to continue our profitable relationships, propose ambitious goals and achieve results in the best traditions of both Europe and Cuba". Both sides agreed that once the agreement is ratified by the 28 member countries of the European Union, it will void the so-called Common Position, issued by the EU in 1996 to demand political reform and respect for human rights in Cuba. Now, negotiations will continue to expand economic cooperation.

Obama became the first US President to visit Cuba in 88 years. The normalization effort between the two countries began in December 2014 and was preceded by months of secret negotiations, facilitated by Pope Francis and largely hosted by Canada. Even though Obama’s visit to Cuba and his meeting with Raúl Castro marks a milestone in ending the five decades stretch of hostility between the countries, geopolitical relations are not restored with merely a handshake and a smile. However, presidential power only goes so far. For the full normalization of relations, Washington will have to lift its embargo against Cuba. And, Havana will have to conduct substantial financial and political reforms. Whether it’s the opposition in the US Congress or the Cuban military elite, both countries still have many obstacles to overcome. A person in Cuba can be sent to jail for the offense of "social danger" without committing any actual crime because of a provision within the Cuban penal code. This provision is a repressive method of enforcing order in society. Rather than reforming citizens' behavior, the social danger law strategically suppresses and imprisons youth. http://www.HavanaSpring.com The Story of Free Cuba Follow us here: Twitter: https://twitter.com/HavanaSpring Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HavanaSpring Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/havanaspring/ Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/10Hg377 cuban dissident, cuba human rights, cuba human rights abuses, human rights abuses in cuba, cuba human rights violation, limitations to freedom of expression, freedom cuba, freedom for cuba, cuba prisons, _______________________________________________ Title: The "Social Dangerousness" Law Author: Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina Date: April 13, 2013 Duration: 04:01" [00:00:04,443] In Cuba, there is an existing provision in the Cuban Penal Code that takes people to jail without having committed any crime. This is commonly called Social Danger. My name is Alidanco Medina. I am of Cuban nationality. I was born on February 28, 1983. Throughout the years, because of my opposition ideals, for not being in agreement with the Castro regime; wherever I am, I am another one oppressed by the police. [00:00:31,942] Wherever the police arrive, they do not pay attention to me because they have bad, bad information about me, only for not believing in the system; because I have been a person who has suffered under the Castro regime. I have been mistreated; I have been abused by the PNG, the National Revolutionary Police. They have me registered only because I do not agree with the systems of this revolution. The youth do not understand why they are taken to jail without having committed any crime. [00:00:59,362] The military authorities allege in the majority of the cases that those people do not work. But the reality demonstrates that there are no jobs, or the jobs that are offered by the regime are very low paid for jobs that require harsh and rough labor. At the age of fourteen, I was unjustly imprisoned, without having committed any crime. They put me in the toughest prison that there could be in Cuba or in the world, in Chaplain where the vilest criminals who had killed people, are incarcerated. [00:01:27,648] They would rape the kids, the adolescents, the elderly; right there and they put me in that prison. They unjustly cut off my studies, separated me from my studies and from my family. Generally, the social danger index is supported by the Cuban judicial system to apply it to people who do not work for the State or who are considered to be the lower social class. However, the social danger index has been applied to many, due to political reasons for the purpose of annulling civic activism in defense of the human rights in their community. [00:01:59,713] Has the Social Danger Law been applied to you? Yes. How many times? Just one time. When? What year? In 2008. And to how many years in jail? Four years. How old are you? I am twenty three. I was put in at eighteen. And can you tell me the arguments used by the repression means to take you to jail? For not working. They say for being anti-social; that for hanging out with anti-socials. Terrorism, state terrorism. It is called State Terrorism. [00:02:31,538] Many young people have had to experience the harshness of a prison in Cuba, leading in many cases, to the total destruction of the victims that once in prison, have found themselves involved in other crimes in the particular penal center were they are imprisoned. For me, the cruelest thing that can be imposed in the country is the Danger Index, because I am 17 years old. I had the Danger Index applied to me which led me to get lost in prison for many years because of my lack of experience. Based upon what? The Danger Index. [00:03:05,263] Another sector seriously affected within the society are the women who have to prostitute themselves to look to improve their lives. To them, the regime has placed them within in this group supposedly because of their predilection to commit crimes. Have you been sanctioned by the Law of Social Danger? Yes, my love. And how many times have you been sanctioned? Just once, thank God. In 2007. To how many years of jail were you sentenced? To one year. [00:03:33,820] To one year? And how old are you? Thirty four. [00:03:39,216] Far from the Social Danger constituting a reforming element of the conduct of Man, on the Island it is just another scheme to repress or imprison the young people, or equally, it is a trap by the repressive means to maintain order by force upon the society over and above the current and existing laws.
